Straight from 1972, in the Golden Age of strategy and role playing games, comes Richtophofen's War, the Air War 1916-1918 from Avalon Hill. This is part of their acclaimed Bookcase Games series. This is a simulation of air combat during World War I, when the infamous "Red Baron", Manfred von Richtofen and other aces roamed the skys seeking their prey.

From the back cover: "It's daybreak 1917. Your Sopwith Camel is revving up on the tarmac outside the operations hut. Put on your goggles and flying suit; for today you have an appointment with a Red Triplane over the skys of France. This might be your day for victory but, for certain, it's Richtofen's War."

Like all Avalon Hill games, is more than just the standard "roll the dice and move" game. It is a realistic simulation of the strategy and tactics of air combat over Europe. Detailed rules provide playing pieces and information for 32 different aircraft. The three part game board provides a realistic overview of a WWI battlefield with towns, trench lines, and artillery craters. The documentation says the board was reproduced from an actual aerial photograph. Each turn represents 10 seconds of real time. Playable for 2-6 players, but recommended for 2.

The set appears complete with most pieces still unpunched. The map board is in excellent condition. The box is not great. It's a bit scuffs and mildlyA warped, but it's done it's job, and the colors are still attractive and crisp.

If you've dreamed of being one of these "Knights of the air", now's your chance!
