Baldwin Manufacturing made a variety of tin and wood toys in the late 1930s and early 1940s. This is a great example of their number 890 Coastal Artillery Cannon. It has a really cool action. To adjust the angle, you turn the knob on the side. To go up, you push the lever, then turn. After that, you pull back the breech block to reveal a slot where you load the wooden bullet (five included); push the breech back in place; then you press the red button to fire. Apparently, the firing spring is weak. All the actions work, but the shell doesn't make it out of the barrel. This could probably be repaired, but it still looks great.

For an older toy, this thing is huge! With the barrel down, it's about 16 inches long and 6 inches high. The dark green paint on the wood is about perfect. The red paint on the metal base has a few spots that are trying to rust, but I think it just adds character. Many examples I've seen online are missing the Baldwin sticker, but this one has it.

Wonderful old toy that will look fantastic on the shelf!
