Gillette WWI US Khaki Set from 1918

This vintage Gillette safety razor is a nice example of a Gillette U.S. Khaki Set. From the razor serial number of G417187, it was made in 1918. Unlike the fancy Service Set (produced so civilians on the home front could purchase them for the soldiers in the field), the Khaki Set that was issued to the troops. It has a canvas case and has the removable shaving mirror. However, the thumbtack (for hanging), and blade box are missing. In spite of the age, if you want to use the razor, you'll need to purchase new Gillette style blades, which are available in a variety of styles from numerous sources. 

I don't know if different razors were issued with these sets. This one has "Property US Army" stamped under the head. I've seen other sets without those markings. I assume you would find a production change if you did the research. Either way, this one has the markings, and I prefer that. 

As you can see in the photos, the silver plating on the razor is not perfect, but it's pretty good. The spot on the top of the head doesn't look as bad in person as it does in the photos. Two of the outer teeth are bent a little. Some people have had success repairing that, but I don't try to mess with things too much. There are two hairline cracks in the handle, but you can have to look close to see them in your hand. It's still tight and works perfectly. The canavas case is interesting. Outside, the prior owner has applied the initials "HK" to the lid. He's also marked this in ink inside under the mirror. Inside, there are some rust spots and stains. To me, these signs of use and wear give it character. Something more than our standard "light clean and sterilize" process would probably improve the whole set, but it looks very good in your hand or on the table.
