Gillette manufactured the Super Speed model in various forms for many years due to its enduring popularity. This type is called a "Blue Tip" or "Light". It was made for the thinner or more fine beard. It has a narrow blade gap and lighter weight than the standard Super Speed. This one is from the fourth quarter of 1957 as shown by the date code of C4.
The Blue Tip is one of the mildest razors out there. It's very hard to make a mistake bad enough to cut yourself, so some recommend it as a good starter razor. Others disagree with that point, but think it is good to use for a "finishing touch" on a perfect shave. Takes a standard double edge razor blade which is available from many sources in stores and online. As with a Tech or other mild razor, a sharper blade would change the shaving character.
As you can see in the photos, it's in overall very good condition for the type. The blue paint is almost never complete, and the aluminum handle is almost always badly tarnished. Compared to others of this type, we rate this example as very good to excellent on those points. The blue paint is eye-popping on this model! However, our "light clean and sterilize" process didn't remove everything, and it probably clean up better with a more thorough process. These are hard to find in general, and even harder in very good shape. There is some brassing under the head you can see in the photos, but in your hand it looks about perfect.
Interesting razor to use, or display for the rarity and history of it.
