This vintage Gillette safety razor is a Gillette Super Speed. Adapted from the earlier Ranger, Sheraton and Senator, this was the first type of the Super Speed. Gillette continued manufacturing the Super Speed in various forms into the 1970s due to its enduring popularity. This example does not have a date code, and does not have the notch for the blade dispenser. This indicates it was made in 1947, the introduction year for this model! We don't see these often, and they're usually in pretty rough shape from the age.

The "standard" Super Speed is considered a mild shaver. A good razor if you're new to wet shaving, or in a hurry. As with other Gillette razors, you can alter the way it shaves by trying different blades. It takes standard double edge blades available from a number of sources, giving a lot of opportunity to experiment. Many consider this early model of the SS better than the later types. The head has a lower profile which effects blade angle and access to tight spots when shaving.

As you can see in the photos, it's in very good condition. Other than a light scuff spot on the head, it looks pretty perfect in your hand. Something more than our "light clean and sterilize" process would probably help it, but it still looks great.

Excellent, historic, razor for use or display.
