This is a fairly early single edge safety razor set. It has a Star Safety Razor in a lather catcher, wedge blade, style razor, produced by Kampfe Brothers. This is in the original storage case. There is also a Kampfe Star wedge blade. The wedge blade was included for display purposes. However, if you want to shave with the razor. you may be able to return the that blade to service, or you can use standard single edge style disposable blades.
This set should date from around 1902. That's the last patent date marked. This is a perfect illustration of the transition from the older wedge blade to the disposable single edge razor blade. As you can see in the photo, a new SE blade fits perfectly. That blade is not included, but any standard single edge blade will fit. These are available in a variety of brands from several sources, including some stores.
As you can see in the photos. the case is not in great condition, but considering it's over 114 years old, we're glad it's here at all. We have run the razor and other metal parts through our standard "light clean and sterilize" process, but it would all benefit from something more thorough. The head is about perfect, but there is some brassing or stains on the handle. The blade has a nice finish. There is some kind of damage to the end of the handle, but you don't feel it in your hand, and you can display it without the damage showing.
Very cool piece of shaving history to collect, and perhaps use!
