This vintage toy is a Hubley Kiddie Toy Road Roller. It's really about the same as the steam roller they were making in the 1920s, but it's made of plastic with wood wheels and it's marked Diesel on the side. We've seen multiple sources list this as 1940s and 1950s, so I'm not sure when it dates from. However, with the wood wheels and axles, I tend to think it was wartime production. The body is made of a green, early plastic, but not bakelite or celluloid.
It's in excellent condition. The silver paint on the body shows some wear, but the red paint on the wheels looks almost untouched. It has gathered a little dust in the crevasses over the years. There is a lump of something (wood?, rubber?) in the body to give it weight. That has come loose and moves around when you turn the toy in your hand.
Cool piece of toy history. It looks good sitting on a shelf too.
