This is a cool little device. As shown by this website, it has a fascinating history. Originally created by the Benton company in 1897, it continued in production almost unchanged until the 1970s. This "deluxe" four digit model was introduced in 1907. We think this example is from 1923. This is based on the Tally Register Company taking over manufacturing in 1917. Also, the engraved cut artwork was changed to a photograph some time after that date.
As you can see in the photos, the counter and box both show some signs of wear. To me, this just adds character. The counter operates perfectly. The "rollover" from 9 to 10, 99 to 100, and 999 to 1000 happens smoothly. The dials on the back reset the device surprisingly quickly.
Neat little device to display or even use.
