The original design of this toothpick holder was patented in 1947. They were mostly marketed in the 1940s and 1950s. It is cast metal. The base is made to look like brass and the woodpecker is possibly iron, but they could both be pot metal.

As you can see in the photos, this example is very good. There are no chips or cracks in the metal, the spring is still present and strong, and both of the pins that pick up the toothpicks are still here and sharp. The paint is worn off in quite a few spots, but I think it just gives it character. The most prominent spots of missing paint are the top of the woodpecker head and the eyes.

Handy item to have in the kitchen whether to use or just enjoy the cute look!
