I've always loved the Electro Match lighter. From what I can tell, this English "DLI Flintless" electric lighter is where they got the idea. It has a provisional design patent from 1950. Just like the Electro Match, you load it up with lighter fluid and batteries, and when you remove the "match", it's lit. It was made in Bridport, Dorset, England by Dorset Light Industries.

The pictures don't capture the neat mock tortoise pattern of the bakelite case. The bottom shot comes closest. We haven't tried it, but it looks like it should work. The light corrosion on the battery contacts can be easily removed.

Interesting side street in the history of lighter development.
