July 20, 1969. It's hard to believe it's been 50 years since men first set foot on the Moon, yet there it is. This Monogram model was made to commemorate the bravery of all the Apollo astronauts in their dangerous journey to our nearest neighbor. There have been reissues of this kit (and there probably is one now), but this is the original.

This thing is huge! It's in 1/32 scale and the box alone is 19.5" x 13.5". I can't tell you how tempted I am to open the box and put it together. I bet it's really something when it's all assembled and painted. There are clear sections to see the astronauts in the command module and to see some of the inner workings of the service module. I can't tell for sure, but I don't think it has an option to build the kit without the clear sections.

Unfortunately, this is a case where leaving the kit in the original packaging might not have been the best thing to do. I couldn't call it Mint in Box or really even New Old Stock, so I settled on Sealed in Box. The shrinkwrap has warped the box somewhat, and it's taken a little water damage over the years. You could probably help it a lot by removing the shrinkwrap. I'm sure you could work the warp out of it at least. The worst part is where the red Monogram/Mattel logo has spread due to apparent water damage. Since it's so large it was hard to photograph, but I took a lot of close-up shots so you could see the good and the bad of it. All in all, it looks good enough and it's so big that it locks your attention as soon as you see it on the shelf.

Very cool, historic kit. If you put it together, I want pictures!
